LOVING LINDA - Stellar Line-up Honouring Comedian and Broadcaster Linda Smith
An A to Z of comedy’s top performers featuring the likes of Jo Caulfield, Jenny Éclair, Barry Cryer and Ronnie Golden, Phill Jupitus and Stewart Lee willl all be gracing the same stage for a not-to-be-missed gala evening of comedy and music with Carol Grimes and Dorian Ford at the Rose Theatre in Kingston-upon-Thames on Sunday 12th May.
This Loving Linda gala is now a regular fixture in the comedy calendar paying tribute to fellow comedian and friend Linda Smith and supporting Target Ovarian Cancer having raised well in excess of £100,000 for the charity to date.
Linda Smith, who died at the much too tender age of 48 on 27 February 2006, was a seasoned regular on radio comedy panel shows The News Quiz, Just a Minute, and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. She also starred in her very own radio sitcom, A Brief History of Time Wasting (2001–2) whilst making guest appearances on Room 101, Question Time and Have I Got News for You, to name just a few. Live entertainment producer and promoter Warren Lakin, Linda’s partner of 23 years took it upon himself to organise this event.
The gala’s hosting duties will be provided by Andy Hamilton, best known for numerous panel show appearances on both radio and TV such as the News Quiz, Have I Got News For You and QI. He is also both the co-creator and co-writer of the popular TV and radio sitcoms Drop the Dead Donkey, Outnumbered, and Old Harry’s Game. When asked about the gala he said he always looks forward to it “not only because it is guaranteed to be hilarious and fun, but it is a fitting tribute to my good friend Linda Smith and a great way of raising funds and awareness for one of the lesser known cancers that affects so many women in the UK”.
Comedienne Jenny Éclair, also putting in a performance on the evening said “I’m really glad to be doing this, I knew Linda and she died far too young from a disease we all need to beat. Any awareness and funds we can raise on May 12th will be a step in the right direction.”
Target Ovarian Cancer is the national ovarian cancer charity endeavouring to save lives and help women diagnosed to live their lives to the full, regardless of their location in UK. Their strategy focuses on improving early diagnosis, finding new treatments and providing women suffering ovarian cancer with the support they deserve and require. Each year 7,000 women are diagnosed in the UK alone with 4,300 losing their battle against this cancer. The UK currently has amongst the lowest survival rates in Europe. Despite all the lastest medical advances, no new life-extending treatments have been discovered in over 20 years. Had it been possible to make the same kind of progress as that achieved in breast cancer over the last twenty years, more than 3,000 women would survive each year.
