Last Days to Enter BBC New Comedy Award

Last Days to Enter BBC New Comedy Award
Howard Gorman

The BBC Radio New Comedy Award is back with a vengeance for 2013 and you only have a few more days to prove you have what it takes to become the future face (and voice) of stand-up comedy.

BBC Radio is searching for performers who have been on the stand-up circuit no longer than three years. What do you have to do to get involved? All you have to do is upload a short set onto Soundcloud also explaining why you think you deserve the coveted title which consists of £1,000 prize money, BBC Radio Comedy commission and, most importantly, that lovely, shiny trophy for your mum’s mantelpiece.

Should your uploaded sets impress the panel of judges, you’ll be invited to one of eight heats taking place at four different cities across the UK (Edinburgh, Manchester, Cardiff and London) where you’ll be battling it out against nine other comedians. Make it thought he heat and you’ll find yourself with a place in the semi-final. A further two runners-up will also be selected at each heat with the judges eventually picking two semi-finalists from all runners-up making it through all four rounds. A further eight runners-up will also go on to face what is know as the public’s ‘wildcard’ vote. The two most entrants most popular with the voters will then be sent through to the semi-finals. At the semi-finals, we’ll be whittling down the entrants to a final six.

The aforementioned heats will all be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and filmed for the BBC website so absolutely no pressure whatsoever. The semi-finals will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 whilst the grand finale will broadcast live on Radio 2, and the outright winner of the BBC Radio New Comedy Award 2013 will be chosen by a public vote rather than a panel of judges.

As we mentioned earlier, you only have until this Friday, June 28th to submit your audio file. Feel free to send in either recordings in front of a live audience or you infront of your bathroom mirror. As long as the panel can hear you then it’s totally acceptable.

Read the competition Terms & Conditions, check out the upload guide and upload your audio entry to Soundcloud (be sure to make this private – shared with ‘’ – enable all downloads, save the file and copy the ‘secret link’ for them) and then submit the entry form!

Should you have any further queries as to how to correctly upload to Soundcloud , please click here.

We’ll leave you with the launch video with Lucy Beaumont, current holder of the BBC new comedy award:
