Mat Ricardo – “If you want instant money, go buy a uni-cycle and a chainsaw. Light that on fire and play some music.”

March 30, 2013 |

A few hours before the second of Mat Ricardo’s Variety Shows takes place at Leicester Square Theatre, we meet up with him at a hotel, that used to be an old courthouse.

“You are sitting in the original cell. Nothing has changed, just the cushions.” a waitress tells us.

“And the table for the drinks, obviously.” Ricardo laughs to the still-straight-faced waitress.

“It is not that long ago. Mick Jagger was here and he is still alive.” she says.

“Yes. Well, that’s debatable.” says Mat, who is dressed exactly the way you would expect a professional gentleman juggler to be dressed: Like a gentleman. He looks the furthest possible from someone who ought to be in jail. Read More

Steve Bennett on the Chortle Comedy Awards – “The bar tab alone cost me a fortune.”

It goes to show that the Chortle Awards is no longer just a piss-up in a bar – it’s a high profile, respected and established piss-up in a bar. Comedy Chords had a talk with the man behind Chortle. Terry Alderton – Escaping Comedy Cul-de-sacs

March 25, 2013 |

Terry Alderton is one of the most original and inventive comedians working today.  He had some success in the past with a more traditional comedy style but he was growing ever more frustrated with his lack of what he calls ‘punk’.  One night in 2005 it became too much and for no apparent reason he decided to let two voices speak out from inside his head. He took to turning his back on the audience for a while to let his inner voices riff about the gig, his own material and indeed the audience themselves.  He would then come back and face the crowd from time to time as himself, before going back to the voices for their blunt analysis of how things were going.
