Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival 2013 drew to a close on the 24th February having featured over 530 events in 60 venues across Leicester and Leicestershire. Over 500 performers appeared and audiences flocked from across the UK to the event, the longest running comedy festival in Europe.
Jimeoin fans will be well aware of his particularly singular breed of comedy and unwonted skill for turning the seemingly mundane into something of a revelation. His uncanny with has thrust him into the limelight, making him the highly sought comedian he is today all around the world. Boasting a severely long list of TV credits you will more likely than not have seen him on the likes of Just For Laughs, Good News Week, Live at the Apollo and a plethora more. We don’t know how he managed to fit us in but he did and we had a good old chinwag with the chap…
Patrick Monahan prepares to embrace the UK with his all-new, aptly titled show ‘Shooting From The Lip!’
Following his massive sell-out run at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe Teesside’s favourite comedian returns from his icy cold spell performing in Norway to continue his latest tour of the UK. Outright winner of the ITV1 series ‘Show Me The Funny’ culminating in the release of his debut DVD ‘Patrick Monahan Live’, the ad-lib king also won the 2011 Forth Radio Best Stand-Up People’s Choice Award whilst putting in an appearance in ‘The Wrestling’ winner of an Edinburgh 2011 Fringe First Award.
Patrick’s achievements also include Best Newcomer at the 2012 Loaded LAFTA Awards and he got downright sexy for Let’s Dance for Sports Relief on BBC1 last March, dressing up as none other than Rihanna. He was also spotted on the goggle box on programmes such as ‘The Comedy Annual’ (ITV1), ‘Daybreak’ (ITV1), ‘Loose Women’ (ITV1), and ‘The Wright Stuff ‘ (C5).
As he prepares to set off on his latest tour whilst also managing to make time for the Ha Ha Hadrian’s Wall Charity Walk (organised by fellow comedian Nick Banks and featuring a cracking lineup), we had a chat with him over a cherry bakewell. All aboard the hugging train…
That time of year has come again where comedy fans get the chance to join in and spot the comedy stars of the future. You have the chance to vote for your favourites alongside comedy industry folk, in the 2013 heats of the prestigious Amused Moose Laugh Offs Award, previously won by the likes of Jack Whitehall and Sarah Millican. Here’s the full breakdown of all 8 heats held over the next couple of weeks…
Zoe Lyons made quite the name for herself back in 2004 winning the ‘Nivea Funny Women Award’ and making her way all the way to the the finals of Channel 4’s ‘So You Think You’re Funny Award’. Since then there’s been no stopping her with television appearances on the likes of Mock The Week and Dave’s One Night Stand and she is now highly sought after both here and abroad. She’s taken to the tour bus again bringing her mixture of the absurd, satire and caustic one liners to a town near you with her Pop-Up Comic show. She won’t be changing the world anytime soon but has assured us that she’ll be asking vital questions such as Dog Prams: why?
Based on the last sentence alone we just had to take the opportunity to question her about the process of creating a solo show and dealing with comedy stereotypes. We also spoke about “offensive” jokes and of course Hitler the vegetarian:
Newcastle comedy club The Stand has a stellar line-up in store with four stars of the hit sitcom Hebburn appearing together for a great comedy night out. Steffen Peddie’s Chat Show Thing is a live and uncensored chat show every 1st Monday of the month with Chris Ramsey, Jason Cook and Neil Grainger set to feature as Big Keith’s latest guests on the 4th of March.
I caught up with broadcaster, writer and Celebrity Masterchef finalist Hardeep Singh Kohli to discuss Twitter, Scientology and, of course, his current tour, Indian Takeaway where he races against the clock to cook the audience an Indian meal before the best local takeaway delivers to the venue. I also took the opportunity to try and blog a free curry:
Mat Ricardo, award-winning juggler, authentic vaudeville performer extraordinaire is one of the most sought after comedy variety performers on the circuit. Such high demand is by and large thanks to unique modern take with which he approaches the grand scheme of things. You will soon all be able to experience this singular show first-hand with his show ‘Mat Ricardo’s London Varieties’ bringing the world’s greatest variety and circus stars to London’s Leicester Square theatre.
Despite the demise of Deansways towards the end of last year, comedian Harry Deansway has found an all new home for his new, twice monthly comedy night, Shambles. This brand new comedy event can be found in the excellent Aces And Eights Salon Bar, where punters can enjoy the best in up and coming talent together with some of the biggest names on today’s comedy circuit.
Trailer Park Boys took its first breath in the form of a black and white movie “mockumenting” the booze fuelled shennanigans of Sunnyvale Trailer Park’s trashy occupants in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Although initially turned down by The Comedy Network, in next to no time the show rocketed to Canadian cult status with the misfortunes and sui generis capers of Ricky, Julian and Bubbles successfully residing on Showcase for a walloping seven-season run.
